Why Every Family Needs a Protection Plan
Insurance, Emergency Funds, and the Documents That Matter Most
Most people don't wake up excited to review their insurance policies or update estate documents.
It's easy to put those tasks off because they don't feel urgent.
But protecting your family isn't about immediate gratification or building wealth—it's about making sure the people you love are cared for when life doesn't go according to plan.
A solid protection plan doesn't have to be complicated. There are three simple areas every family should review regularly. We've put together a Family Protection Planner to help you organize everything in one place. As you work through this process, think about how your own family would answer these questions, then download the planner to update your own protection plan.
1. Build A Stable, Accessible Emergency Fund
Life has a way of surprising us.
A job change. A medical bill. A broken HVAC system in the middle of summer. A transmission that decides today is the day.
An emergency fund gives you options instead of forcing difficult financial decisions during an already stressful season.
While every family's situation is different, a good goal is to have three to six months of essential living expenses set aside in an easily accessible savings account. If you're just getting started, don't let that number overwhelm you. Saving your first $1,000 is a meaningful milestone, and every dollar after that increases your flexibility.
This should be in an account that is separate from your regular checking/bill paying account. It should also earn you competitive interest while it sits there. As of the time I wrote this article, accounts were paying 3.5-4% annually for stable cash. Small choices (both good and bad) compound over time.
The goal isn't perfection. It's peace of mind. Starting somewhere is better than never starting.
🛑 Action Step: Take a few minutes to determine how many months of essential expenses your current emergency fund would cover. You can record that—and the rest of your protection plan—in our free Family Protection Planner.
2. Keep Your Important Documents Organized
Imagine someone else had to step in and run your life tomorrow.
Would they know where to find everything?
Many families have important documents scattered between filing cabinets, email inboxes, desk drawers, and online accounts. Many times, essential information lives nowhere but in a person’s head. In a stressful situation, that creates unnecessary frustration, and things get missed.
Consider keeping these items together in one secure location:
Wills and trust documents
Powers of attorney
Healthcare directives
Life insurance information
Bank and investment account information
Mortgage and loan information
Birth certificates and Social Security cards
Password manager or instructions for accessing important digital accounts
List of key professionals (advisors, CPAs, doctors, attorneys, etc.) with role and contact details
Just as important, make sure someone you trust knows where these documents are stored and how to access them.
We call this system having a clear “financial inventory” which serves as a table of contents to your life. A little organization today can save your family countless hours of stress later.
🛑 Action Step: Write down where your important documents are stored and who knows how to access them. It's one of the most valuable sections inside the Family Protection Planner because it gives your loved ones clarity when they need it most. If you need a Financial Inventory template, reach out, and we can send you one.
3. Review Your Insurance Before You Need It
Insurance isn't something you buy because you expect something bad to happen.
It's something you have because life is unpredictable. Insurance is about transferring risk that you are unable or unwilling to take on yourself.
As your family grows and changes, your coverage should change too.
Ask yourself:
Would my family have enough income if something happened to me?
Have I reviewed my life insurance in the last couple of years?
Do I understand what my disability insurance covers, and how much would be paid?
Have I checked my homeowners and auto coverage recently?
How exposed is our family to lawsuits, and do we have enough liability coverage?
Is our current healthcare coverage still the best at meeting our family's needs?
Have major life changes made any of my current coverages outdated?
Many people purchase insurance once and never revisit it. But marriages, children, home purchases, career changes, and retirement can all affect what protection makes sense.
A quick review every year or two can help ensure your coverage still fits your life. If it has been more than 2 years since you looked closely at your holistic insurance picture, it’s time.
🛑 Action Step: Schedule a recurring reminder to review your insurance coverage annually or after any major life event. Use the Family Protection Planner to keep track of what you've reviewed and when.

Final Thoughts
At StillWater, we believe financial planning involves more than saving money and preparing for retirement. It's about helping families build confidence and lay out a map for living a fulfilling and purposeful life. That involves playing both offense and defense.
One of the greatest gifts you can leave the people you love isn't just financial security—it's clarity. In our experience, after years of working with clients, the WHY, HOW, and WHO matter way more than the WHAT. I have seen many families pass on a rich legacy to their heirs that didn't involve a lot of worldly wealth.
If you'd like to talk through your family's protection plan, or if you have questions as you work through the Family Protection Planner, we'd be honored to be a resource and play a part in your story.
Wishing you both success and fulfillment on your journey.
