What Will We Be Known For?
Since I first had the initial pull in my heart to step away from corporate America and create StillWater Financial Advisors, I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about legacy - what I desire to be known for.
Of course, I want StillWater to be known for providing excellent financial planning and wealth management. That's important. We work hard every day to help families make wise decisions, build financial confidence, prepare for the future, and steward their resources intentionally.
But the truth is, there are thousands of firms that can do those things well.
So, I've found myself asking a different question:
What will StillWater to be known for beyond the work we do? What really sets up apart?
When I think about my own life and the kind of legacy I hope to leave, I keep coming back to a few simple things: authentic relationships, meaningful memories, values lived out, wisdom shared, and helping as many people as I can along the way.
That's changed the way I think about wealth management. It’s not about the “What”. It’s much more about the “Who” and the “Why”. In an increasingly commoditized world, this is the difference maker. This is what will endure and create a ripple effect that will change family trees.
Wealth is a tool, not the destination.
Money can provide opportunities, create security, and help us care for the people we love. But I don't believe accumulating wealth is the end goal.
The more important question is: What are we going to do with what we've been given?
How will we use our time, talents, relationships, and resources to make a difference?
That's where I believe financial planning can become something much more meaningful than managing investments or building a retirement plan.
Good planning should help you make intentional decisions about the life you want to live—and the impact you want to have along the way. The true definition of what money provides for us is the ability to more freely choose how we use our time. How we choose to use our time shows the world what we care about most.
Invest today with the desired end in mind.
That idea has always been at the heart of StillWater. And it's also part of what inspired us to create the StillWater Impact Team. Wealth management is about gathering, protecting, and growing. The Impact Team is about turning preparation into action.
To live the best version of your life you need to address both pieces. Action without preparation leads to chaos. Preparation without action leads to regret and stagnation.
Better Together.
There are a host of incredible nonprofits doing essential work in our communities every single day. It is easy to take for granted how essential these organizations are in keeping our society afloat.
They're helping people overcome adversity. They're providing food, shelter, and protection. They're supporting children and families. They're creating opportunities for people to experience hope, dignity, joy, and freedom.
I don't feel called to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the nonprofit space.
The alternative is to selectively come alongside organizations that are already doing this work well. To help promote them, support them, fund them, and equip them however we can.
And I want to bring along as many values-aligned people as possible.
That's where the Impact Team comes in.
The StillWater Impact Team is our way of putting some of these virtues into action.
It's a community of people who want to serve, connect, and live generously together. Sometimes that will mean volunteering. Sometimes it will mean supporting a charity event. Sometimes it will mean a donation drive. Sometimes it will be thinktanks and problem-solving sessions. And sometimes it will simply mean gathering with good people around a cause that matters.
The goal isn't to do something impressive.
It's to consistently show up. To ask the question “What do you need and how can I help?”
We've already had the opportunity to support organizations like The Harvest Center of Charlotte, Out of the Ashes, All Things Possible Mobility, Congregations for Kids and more. And we're just getting started.
So, what do I want StillWater to be known for?
Yes, I want us to be known for excellent financial advice. You should always expect us to serve you with excellence and to care about your goals as if they were our own.
But even more than that, I want StillWater to be known as a place where people are encouraged to live with purpose.
A place where wealth is viewed (and used) as a tool for good.
A place where relationships matter.
A place where generosity is practiced daily, not just talked about.
A place that brings people together to create opportunities and makes a meaningful difference in the communities we call home.
That's what I hope the StillWater Impact Team becomes over time.
